What Does "YA" Mean, Anyway?

The new Young Adult Room at the Welles-Turner Memorial Library is now open! This room is designed for middle and high school students. It has carrels to study in and armchairs to relax in. It also has a computer with word processing software, a scanner, and Internet access.

What is in this room? Lots of hardcover and paperback fiction. Stop in and browse our shelves. Authors range from old favorites you read in the children's department who also write for young teens to authors you'll also find in the adult department. Horror lovers can move from R. L. Stine to Diane Hoh and on to Steven King to Mary Shelley (Frankenstein). For romance lovers, we've got Sunset Beach and Sweet Valley High/University novels. Mystery fans will find Joan Lowery Nixon, Phyllis Reynolds Naylor, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Agatha Christie, Laurie R. King, Lillian Braun, Tony Hillerman, and many more. For science fiction and fantasy afficionados, try Anne MacCaffrey, Madeleine L'Engle, Andre Norton, Diane Duane, Philip Pullman, Orson Scott Card, Mercedes Lackey, or Katharine Kurtz. Other popular authors include Rob Thomas, Caroline B. Cooney, Ron Koertge, Robert Cormier, Thomas Dygaard, Chris Crutcher, Joan Bauer, Harry and Norma Mazer, Lawrence Yep, and Paul Zindel.

We also have a small reference area (these books can not be taken out of the library)and a non-fiction area. Most of the non-fiction books in this room are books with special teen interest, either because of subject matter or school assignments. There are many books in the children's department that will be helpful to middle school and high school students working on certain class assignments, and, of course, many in the adult department, too. We also have a growing collection of teen videos (YA VIDEO in the computer) and books on tape. You can also find some teen magazines, with more on the way soon. Music CD's are also now available. BUT...

WE NEED YOUR HELP!

We need to know what YOU want to see in this room! Who are your favorite authors? Performers? What topics do you want to read about? What are your favorite magazines? What programs would you like to have at the library (astrology? chess? Magic the Gathering tournaments? movie nights? book discussion groups? poetry slams?) ?

If you'd like to help plan and run programs for other teens, please join our Teen Advisory Board (TAB). Teens in grades 7-12 are invited to participate. We usually meet on the second Monday or Wednesday of each month at 3:30. (High school students, participation in TAB can count towards community service hours.)

If you have any ideas or suggestions or want to join the TAB, please let us know. You can email us or stop by the department. Our desk is in the children's room. Ask for Miriam Neiman or Renee Pease, or simply tell whoever is at the desk what you'd like to say.
