"Stand Up for Your Right to Read"
Banned Books Week 2016
Celebrate your freedom to read during Banned Books Week. The freedom to choose what we read from a wide variety of possibilities is firmly rooted in the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, the amendment that guarantees freedom of speech and freedom of the press. These freedoms are essential to our democracy.
This year, Banned Books Week focuses on diversity of authors and ideas that have prompted a disproportionate share of challenges. The American Library Association's (ALA) Office of Intellectual Freedom estimates that over half of all banned books are written by authors of color or ones that represent groups or viewpoints out of the mainstream.
The Top Ten Most Challenged Books in 2015 according to the ALA's Office of Intellectual Freedom were:
Looking for Alaska - John Green
Fifty Shades of Grey - E.L. James
I Am Jazz - Jessica Herthel and Jazz Jennings
Beyond Magenta: Transgender Teens Speak Out - Susan Kuklin
The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time - Mark Haddon
The Holy Bible
Fun Home - Alison Bechdel
Habibi - Craig Thompson
Nasreen's Secret School: A True Story from Afghanistan - Jeanette Winter
Two Boys Kissing - David Levithan
Stand up for your right to read, and read a banned book today!
