Selected Internet Links: Databases and Subscription Services
The Welles-Turner Memorial Library subscribes to several databases and services. Some of them are available to patrons both at the library and from remote locations (home or office). Others must be used at the library. Below is a link and brief description of each.
Byki is a powerful language learning system that uses flashcards to teach you a set of words or phrases. It is the fastest possible way to lock foreign words and phrases in your long term memory.You will need to register for this service at the library before you can access it from home. Simply click on the Byki link on the library's home page, then click on the green "sign up" button on the Byki page.
You may search for grants by geographic focus, area of interest (including, but not limited to, the arts, community improvement, education, employment, health, human services, youth, and public safety), and type of support (e.g. capital campaigns, grants to individuals, student aid). You must be at the library to access this database. See a reference librarian for the user name and password. Only one user may be logged in at a time. Please be sure to log out when you are finished.
The EBSCO database references hundreds of magazines. Most searches will produce full-text magazine articles, as well as some abstracts. It also provides access to ERIC (the U.S. Department of Education Educational Resource Information Center database), Health Source, Primary Search (children's magazines and pamphlets), Funk and Wagnells Encyclopedia, and EBSCO Animals. ePrep prepares students for the SAT, ACT, and PSAT. Students download practice tests, then input their answers online to get the test graded. Unlike some other test prep programs, ePrep monitors your progress and recommends subject matter and strategy lessons for review. Video feedback is available. To access this resource, you will need to register for it at the library first. Please see a reference librarian.
Freegal is a downloadable music service with access to the Sony Music Entertainment catalog. It offers hundreds of thousands of songs from more than fifty music labels. You may download up to three songs a week. Music is downloaded through your browser; no installation is necessary. Songs are downloaded in mp3 format and will therefore play on any mp3 player or device. They may also be burned to a CD. To access this resource, you will need the barcode from your Glastonbury library card.
Search in Issues and Controversies to explore more than 800 hot topics in business, politics, government, education, and popular culture. The database includes primary sources, timelines, statistical tables, and pro/con articles. It is updated weekly and has a thirteen-year backfile. You will need the bar code from your Glastonbury library card to access this database.
Offers full page and article images with searchable full text back to the first issue. The collection includes digital reproductions providing access to every page from every available issue. This state-sponsored site contains links to a wide variety of databases, which are detailed below. You will need to input the barcode from your library card to access this database from home. Although the default setting will search multiple databases at a time, results are often better if you choose an individual database.
2-1-1 Community Resources Directory
Contains listings for health and human service providers, 13,000 sites, and more than 39,000 service-sites, mostly Connecticut-based. Connecticut residents can dial 2-1-1 for assistance, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Maintained by Infoline.
Academic OneFile
Provides articles from leading journals and reference sources. Covers the physical sciences, technology, medicine, social sciences, the arts, theology, literature, and other academic subjects.
Biography and Genealogy Master Index
BGMI indexes current, readily available reference sources, as well as the
most important retrospective works that cover individuals, both living and deceased, from every field of activity and from all areas of the world. This resource will help you determine which publication to consult for biographical information. It will not provide you with the actual biographies.
Biography In Context
Biographies in the areas of literature, science, multicultural studies, business, entertainment, politics, sports, government, history, current events, and the arts. Entries may consist of narrative biographies, thumbnail biographies, full-text magazine articles, recent updates, and links to web sites.
Books & Authors
This resource is helpful to those who want to find "another book like..." as well as for book club members who want to know more about an author or explore a book's themes. Approximately 150,000 titles by over 50,000 authors are in the database, with more being added on a regular basis. Browsers may search by favorite genres, including non-fiction, mystery, romance, science fiction, and inspirational titles.
Business and Company Resource Center
Covers 1980 - present. Company profiles, company brand information, rankings, investment reports, company histories, chronologies, and periodicals. Search this database to find detailed company and industry news and information.
Christian Science Monitor
Covers 1980 - present (1997-present for full-text). An independent daily (5-day) general newspaper providing national and international news and commentary on peoples and cultures. Articles are written by correspondents in eleven different countries.
Connecticut Consumer Health Information
Includes a research service for consumers with personal medical questions -- for Connecticut residents only; extensive links to Internet resources; resource guides; medical news; maintained by the UCONN Health Center Lyman Maynard Stowe Library.
Connecticut Digital Collections
A collaboration between the Connecticut Historical Society, the Connecticut State Library, the Thomas J. Dodd Research Center at the University of Connecticut, Mystic Seaport, and the New Haven Colony Historical Society. This site contains over 14,000 images of photographs, drawings and prints.
Connecticut Physician Profiles
Information on doctors' academic background, specializations, professional affiliations, and any disciplinary actions which may have been taken against him/her.
DISCovering Collection
A collection of 26 databases covering history, literature, biography, science and social studies. Extremely helpful for students.
E-Reference Books
Over sixty reference works may be electronically searched. The Connecticut Humanities Council created this comprehensive directory of the state’s history resources for teachers, students, and researchers. The Connecticut Historical Resources should be particularly helpful for students. The cultural activities calendar is another item of interest.

Hartford Courant - Historical
Includes full-page coverage 1764 - December 31, 1922. Welles-Turner Library also subscribes to the historical database which covers 1923-1985. This resource is searchable by keyword and date.
Health and Wellness Resource Center
Use this database to find articles on: alternative medicine, fitness, pregnancy, nutrition, diseases, public health, occupational health & safety, alcohol and drug abuse, HMOs, prescription drugs, etc, and statistics on various diseases. The material contained in this database is intended for informational purposes only. Sources include full-text magazines, journals, and pamphlets.
Heritage Quest
Research resource for family history and American culture includes U.S. federal census records and the UMI Genealogy and Local History collection.
History Resource Center (U.S. and World)
Provides articles from magazines, journals, reference and non-fiction books; biographies, documents and speeches; maps and photographs. Also includes film and video clips of social, political, and cultural historical events of the 20th Century from 1893 to 1985. This database is intended for high school students and adult researchers.

Medline Plus
MedlinePlus Includes information from the National Library of Medicine (NLM), the National Institutes of Health (NIH), and other health-related agencies and organizations. Includes a medical encyclopedia and dictionary, information in Spanish, information on prescription and nonprescription drugs, and links to clinical trials.
New York Times
Search the New York Times electronically by title, headline, date, author, section or other assigned field from 1980-present.
PowerSearch
iCONN’s largest collection of articles from magazines, newspapers, academic journals and trade publications. Gale PowerSearch provides researchers with access to almost all the Gale content in your library's collection through a single search. Users may create individual account profiles to facilitate their research. Provides citations in multiple formats. Articles may be downloaded as .mp3 files as well as translated into several languages. Indexes articles from 1980-present.
Science Resource Center
Provides articles from scientific reference books, magazines, journals, biographies and images. High school and adult audience.
LawDepot provides a quick and easy way to create customizable legal documents. By following a simple step-by-step process, library patrons will be able to create hundreds of state-specific legal forms. After a document has been completed, users will have the option to print, download, or save their form to LawDepot’s secure archive. All LawDepot documents have been developed by an experienced team of in-house lawyers and are regularly updated to ensure accuracy.

Law Depot provides users the ability to create customized legal documents simply by following a step-by-step process. Users receive immediate scoring and an individualized analysis of their results.
This resource contains a wealth of information about businesses. You may research companies by geographic area, size, and type of business. Search up or down in the chain to discover subsidiaries or home offices. Information on many company officials is available. The residential portion of this database is an up-to-date listing of phone numbers across the country. To access this database from the library or from home, click on the link from this page. (Your password will not work if you do not access from this page.) You will be asked for your password. Type in your fourteen-digit Glastonbury barcode and hit ENTER. reQuest is the Statewide Library Catalog of Connecticut. It is administered by the Connecticut State Library in conjunction with the Department of Higher Education. Simultaneously search over three million titles located in over three hundred Connecticut libraries. You may look for articles, books, music, movies, and audiobooks. To find a particular article in a magazine or journal, it is helpful to use the Advance Search feature. You will be asked for your library card number.
Take an online, non-credit, personal enrichment class from a live instructor. All classes are Internet-based and may be done on your own schedule. Classes are divided into more than forty categories, including Accounting and Bookkeeping, Arts and Photography, Career Training, Computers and Technology, Cooking, Crafts and Hobbies, Financial Management, GED Training, Health and Medicine, History, Homeschooling, Medical Billing, Office Skills, Psychology, Real Estate, Science, Self-Help, Spiritual Studies, and Writing Help. You may enroll in up to five courses, and you have up to six months to finish each course. Instructors are available via email. (You must have a valid email address to register.)
