The Welles-Turner Memorial Library subscribes to several databases. Some of them are available to patrons both at the library and from remote locations (home or office). Others must be used at the library. Below is a link to each database, along with a brief description of what it contains.


CT Grantmakers Online

You may search for grants by geographic focus, area of interest (including, but not limited to, the arts, community improvement, education, employment, health, human services, youth, and public safety), and type of support (e.g. capital campaigns, grants to individuals, student aid). You must be at the library to access this database. See a reference librarian for the user name and password. Only one user may be logged in at a time. Please be sure to log out when you are finished.

Historical Hartford Courant (1764-1984)
Offers full page and article images with searchable full text back to the first issue. The collection includes digital reproductions providing access to every page from every available issue. You will need to input the barcode from your Welles-Turner library card to use this database from home.

Historical New York Times (1851-2001)
Offers full page and article images with searchable full text back to the first issue. The collection includes digital reproductions providing access to every page from every available issue. To use this database, first click on "clear all databases" at the top or bottom of the screen. Then scroll down and select "ProQuest Historical Databases: New York Times". You will need to input the barcode from your library card to use this database from home.

iCONN
This state-sponsored site contains links to a wide variety of databases, which are detailed below. You will need to input the barcode from your library card to access this database from home. To search only in selected databases, click or double-click to add or remove a resource from the search.

2-1-1 Community Resources Directory
Contains listings for health and human service providers, 13,000 sites, and more than 39,000 service-sites, mostly Connecticut-based. Connecticut residents can dial 2-1-1 for assistance, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Maintained by Infoline.
Academic OneFile
Provides articles from leading journals and reference sources. Covers the physical sciences, technology, medicine, social sciences, the arts, theology, literature, and other academic subjects.
AP Photo Archive
The international photo archive features state, regional, and national photos from North America and the best of the international photo report. Hundreds of new photos are added daily. The Euro/Asian photo archive features regional photos from Europe and Asia, some with foreign language captions.
Biography and Genealogy Master Index
BGMI indexes current, readily available reference sources, as well as the most important retrospective works that cover individuals, both living and deceased, from every field of activity and from all areas of the world. This resource will help you determine which publication to consult for biographical information. It will not provide you with the actual biographies.
Biography Resource Center
Biographies in the areas of literature, science, multicultural studies, business, entertainment, politics, sports, government, history, current events, and the arts. Entries may consist of narrative biographies, thumbnail biographies, full-text magazine articles, recent updates, and links to web sites.
Business and Company Resource Center
Covers 1980 - present. Company profiles, company brand information, rankings, investment reports, company histories, chronologies, and periodicals. Search this database to find detailed company and industry news and information.
Connecticut Consumer Health Information
Includes a research service for consumers with personal medical questions -- for Connecticut residents only; extensive links to Internet resources; resource guides; medical news; maintained by the UCONN Health Center Lyman Maynard Stowe Library.
Connecticut History Online
A collaboration between the Connecticut Historical Society, the Connecticut State Library, the Thomas J. Dodd Research Center at the University of Connecticut, Mystic Seaport, and the New Haven Colony Historical Society. This site contains over 14,000 images of photographs, drawings and prints.
Connecticut Physician Profiles
Information on doctors' academic background, specializations, professional affiliations, and any disciplinary actions which may have been taken against him/her.
DISCovering Collection
A collection of 26 databases covering history, literature, biography, science and social studies. Extremely helpful for students.
E-books
Thirteen reference works may be electronically searched. Encyclopedia of Connecticut History
The Connecticut Humanities Council created this comprehensive directory of the state’s history resources for teachers, students, and researchers. The Connecticut Historical Resources should be particularly helpful for students. The cultural activities calendar is another item of interest.

Covers 1992 - present. Full text articles. (Only non-copyrighted materials available.)
Hartford Courant - Historical
Includes full-page coverage 1764 - December 31, 1922. This resource is searchable by keyword and date.
Health and Wellness Reference Center
Use this database to find articles on: alternative medicine, fitness, pregnancy, nutrition, diseases, public health, occupational health & safety, alcohol and drug abuse, HMOs, prescription drugs, etc, and statistics on various diseases. The material contained in this database is intended for informational purposes only. Sources include full-text magazines, journals, and pamphlets.
Heritage Quest
Research resource for family history and American culture includes U.S. federal census records and the UMI Genealogy and Local History collection.
History Reference Center
Provides articles from magazines, journals, reference and non-fiction books; biographies, documents and speeches; maps and photographs. Also includes film and video clips of social, political, and cultural historical events of the 20th Century from 1893 to 1985. This database is intended for high school students and adult researchers.

Search the New York Times electronically by title, headline, date, author, section or other assigned field from 1980-present.
Science Resource Center
Provides articles from scientific reference books, magazines, journals, biographies and images. High school and adult audience.
Student Resource Center
History and science resources from reference books, magazines, journals, biographies, film, and images. Intended for a middle school audience.

This Google-owned service claims to be the single largest historical newspaper database online, containing more newspaper pages from 1759 to present than any other service. Unfortunately, Connecticut papers are not at this time (November 2006) represented. However, this resource may be helpful for events of national import and perhaps for genealogists.

This resource contains a wealth of information about businesses. You may research companies by geographic area, size, and type of business. Search up or down in the chain to discover subsidiaries or home offices. Information on many company officials is available. The residential portion of this database is an up-to-date listing of phone numbers across the country.

The EBSCO database references hundreds of magazines. Most searches will produce full-text magazine articles, as well as some abstracts.
