Try to find a regular reading time. 15-20 minutes a day is all it takes.
Always read books that you enjoy.
Read with expression! Take your cue from the story. If a character is running, read quickly. If something is about to happen, slooooow down.
Pace your story so that the child has time to take in what s/he is hearing.
Involve the child in the story with questions or comments. Invite them to make animal noises, repeat whole lines, or finish a sentence.
Remember that you'll hear "Read it again!" often and that you will tire of a story long before your child does.
Ask one of the Children's Librarians for suggestions for good read-alouds.
Please look for The Read-Aloud Handbook by Jim Trelease (JPS 372.45 TRELEASE) for everything you ever wanted to know about reading aloud. This book by "the King of Read-Alouds" includes annotated book lists.
