Drop-In Programs

Take Your Child to the Library DayTake Your Child to the Library Day

Celebrate the first annual Take Your Child to the Library Day on Saturday, February 4, 2012. Connecticut librarian Nadine Lipman thought it would be a great idea to celebrate the wonders of the library with her younger library patrons and their families. Little did she realize that her idea would catch fire and spread not only across Connecticut, but across the country and even across continents! Children's book illustrator Nancy Elizabeth Wallace designed the bunny graphic for the event, which is planned to become an annual happening. Join us for a full day of fun programs!

Storytimes

The Welles-Turner Memorial Library offers a six-week storytime session for children in the fall, winter, and spring. The storytimes for each age group are designed to be appropriate for the different stages of children's development. The age groups are arranged so that children will be with others who will be entering kindergarten the same year. Storytimes are not held during school vacations.

The Winter Storytime session for children ages 15 months – 5 years runs January 23-March 9. Registration forms will be accepted January 5-10 for Glastonbury residents any time during library hours. All registrations will be processed randomly on January 11. Confirmations will be sent upon completion of registration. Non-Glastonbury residents may register for remaining spaces beginning Tuesday, January 17.

A birth certificate or other document with the child's birth date must be presented at the time of registration for first-time participants.

You may choose to receive your confirmation letter by email or you may provide a self-addressed stamped envelope. Registration will not be accepted without one of the above.

Space in each class is limited. Classes may be combined or cancelled due to low enrollment. Children placed on the waiting list will receive priority during registration for the next session. A new registration form must be submitted at that time.

A child may register for only one storytime.

Exceptions based on child's age may be made in consultation with the Children's Librarian if spaces remain on January 12.

This lap sit program for ages 15-24 months introduces children and their parents or care givers to books, nursery rhymes, finger plays, bounces, and songs. Our goal is to foster an early love of books and to remind parents of the importance of reading to children.

This group meets for approximately thirty minutes in the Children's Program Room. Parents and caregivers actively participate in all activities, so dress comfortably. You will be sitting on the floor with your child on your lap. In order to devote full attention to your child, no siblings, please.

Side-by-Side

Side-by-Side is an interactive program for two-year-olds and their parents or caregiver. Parents are active participants in the circle games, finger plays, action rhymes, and stories. The program allows the child a half-hour of one-on-one sharing with the parent in a group setting. In order to make this a special time for you and your child, no siblings, please.

Children must have been born in 2009 to register for this program. Children with birthdays in January or February 2009 may register for Smart Start I if they have already attended Side-by-Side and are comfortable without a parent present. Children who are not yet two should have already completed One is W-One-derful. See above for registration details.

Smart Start Storytime I

This program is for children born in 2008. This thirty minute program introduces children to classic picture books and fun stories. Finger rhymes, flannel boards, songs, action rhymes, and other related activities are designed to foster pre-reading skills. It is designed as a child’s first experience in a group setting without an adult. Children under three who are not comfortable without a parent present should register for Side-by-Side. See above for registration details.

Smart Start Storytime II

This program introduces older preschoolers to longer, more detailed books. Children are encouraged to participate in finger rhymes, songs, and flannel board activities featuring early literacy activities as they gain confidence in a group setting without a parent present.

This program is for children born in 2006 or 2007 who are NOT enrolled in Kindergarten. See above for registration details.
