Search Tools Just for Kids

Note to parents: the following sites either use filtering software to screen out sites inappropriate for children or have links prescreened and preselected by parents/educators/librarians. Please be aware that no filtering system is perfect. There is no substitute for parental supervision.
700+ Great Sites for Kids
http://www.ala.org/parentspage/greatsites/
The American Library Association has selected these sites. Some of them are educational, and some of them are for fun. It's a fun site to poke around in.

Ask.com for Kids
http://www.askforkids.com/
Ask.com for Kids makes it easier for kids to find things on the Internet. It uses "natural language", which means you type in a question the way you'd ask your mom or a teacher. Then Ask picks the important words and finds web sites it thinks might help. Web sites are screened by editors, so you should only get "kid friendly" results.

Internet Public Library: Youth
http://www.ipl.org/youth/
Another site with lots of links, organized by topic and subtopic (Sports and Recreation: Football, Baseball, Basketball...). There are fewer links in each category than on some other sites mentioned here, but what they have is very good and very interesting. Sponsored by the University of Michigan School of Information.

KidsClick!
http://www.kidsclick.org
A huge site together by librarians (Ramapo Catskill Library System). Search by letter or by topic. Each topic has subtopics (Science & Math: Animals, Dinosaurs, Experiments). Clicking a subtopic brings up a list of sites and their descriptions. Notes under the description (ex. [Illustrations: some | Reading Level: 3-6 | Subject: Monsters ]) can help you decide if the site is a good one for you. Younger kids might want some help their first few times here.
Scholastic's Research Tools
http://teacher.scholastic.com/researchtools/index.htm
This is not a search engine, but it will help you find information about a lot of school-related subjects. Links to an articles archive from Scholastic News and Junior Scholastic and to a web guide maintained primarily by educators. Topics include World, U.S., math, science, Internet, sports, jobs, and more. Easy to use, with brief reviews of selected sites.

Yahoo
http://kids.yahoo.com/
Yahoo's search engine for children. It's set up like Yahoo, but geared for kids. The top screen has fewer topics to choose from, but they're all things for kids: school stuff, etc. This site requires Flash.
