How to Read Call Numbers

Sometimes people aren't sure where to look for a book, or they aren't sure what the computer is telling them when they look up a book they want to read. We hope this page helps!

These are the codes we use at Welles-Turner library.

We use the Dewey Decimal system to catalog our non-fiction books. If the computer shows you a J (or YA) followed by a number, that means the book you are looking at is a factual book (it's about real things), not a story. You might also see a JE followed by a number. Even though we said earlier that JE books are usually picture books, these are factual books, too. But they are written for younger children.

The chart below will help you discover where to look for different kinds of information.
