"What's J 599.2?"

Sometimes people aren't sure where to look for a book, or they aren't sure what the computer is telling them when they look up a book they want to read. We hope this page helps!

These are the codes we use at Welles-Turner library.

FICTION

• JE BABY    ex. JE BABY HILL
  JE BABY means this is a board book meant for toddlers.
• JE or JE (name)    ex. JE WELLS
  JE books are usually picture books. A J always tells you the book is in the children's department. The E means it's written for younger children. The picture books are arranged alphabetically by the author's last name. In the example, you'd find the W's and look for WELLS.
• JE PPB (name)    ex. JE PPB REY
  PPB means it's a paperback book. And there's that JE again, so you know it's a picture book, not a chapter book. Our JE paperbacks are kept in plastic bins. Look for the bin that has the R books. (The bins have labels like Q-T. The books in the bin are all by authors whose last names begin with Q, R, S, and T. But the books in the bin aren't in alphabetical order, so you have to start by looking at the first one and keep going until you find the one you want. You'll probably find others that look fun to read, too!)
• J or J (name)    ex. J BELLAIRS
  J tells you the book is in the children's department. It's followed by the author's last name. In the example, you'd find the B's and look for BELLAIRS. Remember, books are filed alphabetically, so Bellairs is after Bailey and before Blume.
• J PPB or J PPB (name)    ex. J PPB GIFF
  You already know that the J tells you the book is in the children's department. Did you see the explanation above that PPB stands for paperback? It's followed by the author's last name. So in this example, you need to find the paperback books, go to the G's, and find Patricia Reilly Giff's books.
• YA (name) or JT (name)    ex. YA MAZER
  YA and JT tell you that the book is in our new Young Adult room. (Books with a JT call number are gradually being switched to YA.) In this example, you'd look in the M's.
• YA PPB (name)    ex. YA PPB TOLKIEN
  You've probably figured out that this is a Young Adult paperback book written by J R R Tolkien. These are in the teen room, too.
• J TKBK (name) or YA TKBK (name)    ex. J TKBK PATERSON
  TKBK means it's a book on tape (talking book). And there's that J/YA again, so you know it's in the children's department. These items are not filed alphabetically. The YA audiobooks have a YA sticker on the spine. They have been moved to our new YA area.
• ZI or ZM or ZS (word or name)    ex. ZM RAFFI
  Z means this is a cassette in the children's area. A ZI tells you that this is an informational tape. A ZM means it's a music tape. And a ZS call number tells you that this is one of our spoken word tapes. (These are often abridged, or "shortened", versions of books, so they have a different call number than the TKBK's.) These items are not filed alphabetically, so you may have to look at a few tapes before you find the one you want.
