The Big Read is an initiative of the National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with the Institute of Museum and Library Services and Arts Midwest. Its goal is to revitalize the role of literary reading in American culture. The Big Read encourages communities to choose a single book that residents can read and discuss in programs and events held by the local sponsoring organizations. The NEA also supplies materials such as reader's guides, bookmarks, and posters to call attention to the program and encourage people to participate. In existence since 2006, the program began in ten communities and has now spread to over 400.
